Give me a bare strip and eight weeks and I would sow this before most catalogue perennials. The bees find it. They stay on it. On a warm morning the blue-purple coils look dusted with movement.

That is phacelia for bees in a British garden: a fast annual, a green manure you actually let flower, and one of the most reliable nectar plants you can put in from a packet.

This is not a native wildflower and it is not a tidy edging plant. It is Phacelia tanacetifolia — lacy phacelia, sometimes sold as purple tansy. The job is simple. Cover ground. Open a mass of bloom. Feed honey bees and wild bees while the border is still thinking about it.

I keep hives on village forage in the East Midlands. Phacelia shows up in the mix, not as its own village label. At Oakwood it sits with buckwheat, clover and wild radish. At Woodborough it runs with lime. There is no separate phacelia honey on the shelf. The plant still earns the seed.

How to recognise phacelia

Look for the coil. New flowers are tucked in a fiddlehead at the tip. They unroll as they open, so the spike is always working — buds at one end, open blue-purple bells at the other.

The colour is lavender-blue more than true purple. Stamens stick out. From a pace away the plant looks misty. Up close it is a brush of stamens that bees can land on without a fight.

Leaves are finely cut, almost ferny. Soft to the touch. The plant branches if it has space and makes a low, busy mound rather than a single spike. Height is usually knee to thigh on decent soil. On poor ground it stays shorter and still flowers.

Do not confuse it with lavender. Lavender is woody, grey-leaved, and stays for years. Phacelia is an annual. It comes from seed, blooms, sets seed, and is gone. Do not confuse the ferny leaf with cosmos either. Cosmos has open daisy faces. Phacelia has those coiled racemes.

If the packet says Phacelia tanacetifolia, you have the right one. Other phacelias exist. This is the forage plant.

When phacelia flowers in the UK

Count weeks from sowing, not from a bank holiday.

In most of England you can sow from March or April once the soil has some warmth, through to July. Flowering often starts six to eight weeks later. An April sowing is in bloom by early summer. A June sowing covers the gap when the first flush of perennials has gone over.

It does not like a sitting-wet winter as a plant you keep. Treat it as a hardy annual. A late sowing may still flower into autumn on a mild year. The first hard frost finishes it.

Succession is the useful trick. Sow a strip in April. Sow another in June. You get two waves instead of one short burst. That is how you use phacelia for bees through the summer, not as a single weekend job.

Why bees work phacelia

Honey bees treat a block of phacelia like a trough.

The flowers are easy to land on. Nectar is there on a warm day. Pollen comes too — you will see the baskets colour up when a strip is in full roll. Bumblebees use it. Hoverflies turn up. This page is still about bees.

Quantity is the point. One plant in a pot is a snack. A square metre from a packet is forage. Honey bees lock on and work it. That is the same rule as a bee friendly garden anywhere: plant in a block, not a dot.

It earns the “super bee” nickname in seed aisles because the traffic is obvious. You do not need a clipboard. Stand by the strip at noon.

Short-tongued bees can use it. Long-tongued bumblebees use it as well. You are not choosing a specialist flower. You are putting out a mass of open bloom at the height of the season.

Let it flower. That sounds obvious until someone grows it only as green manure and digs the lot in before the first coil opens. The soil gets a crop. The bees get nothing. If you sowed it for bees, leave the flowers on.

How to grow phacelia for bees

Seed. Sun. Bare soil. Water if it cakes.

Rake a strip. Sow thinly. Cover lightly. Keep the birds off for a week if they are greedy. Thinning is optional. A slightly tight row still blooms.

Full sun is best. Light shade will flower with less nectar. Do not bury it in a wet clay hollow. It will sulk.

You do not need feed. It is often used to improve soil. For bees, the soil can stay ordinary.

Cut a path if the strip is wide. Leave the rest. Deadheading is not required for a forage patch. If you want less self-sowing next year, cut after the main bloom and before the seed rattles. If you want it back, let some seed drop.

Pots work. A deep trough of phacelia on a sunny balcony will draw bees if you group it with other open flowers. One thin pot on a table will not. Water containers. Dry phacelia stops paying.

Do not spray it. There is no point sowing a bee plant and then running a systemic through the same soil.

What the honey tastes like — and what it is not

When the stand is heavy enough, the bees can make a distinct honey from it. On our ground that has not meant a village jar labelled “phacelia honey”.

Digging it in as green manure two days before it would have flowered, then saying phacelia does nothing for bees.

Sowing a pinch in a mixed pot and expecting hive-level traffic.

Buying a “super bee” packet and planting it in deep shade.

Spraying the strip because something else in the bed had greenfly.

Waiting for it to come back as a perennial. It will not. Sow again, or let seed fall.

On a midsummer afternoon the landing board changes. The bees come in paler, and the smell off the combs is lighter. Walk the ride behind the apiary and you see why. Tall pink spikes, four petals, a stand that looks like it was poured down the edge of the wood. That is rosebay willowherb for bees — not a border plant, a working crop when you leave it alone.

How to recognise rosebay willowherb

Rosebay willowherb is Chamerion angustifolium — you will still see Epilobium angustifolium on older labels. In North America they call it fireweed. Same plant. It is not a willow. The name is the leaf: long, narrow, willow-like, arranged up a straight stem.

Look for height first. A strong stand reaches head height and keeps going. The flower spike is pink to magenta, opening from the bottom of the raceme upwards, so you get seed fluff at the base while the tip is still in bloom. Four petals. Long stamens. In full sun the whole bank can look washed with pink.

The seed is the giveaway later in the season. Fine plumes, like rosebay snow, catching on grass and fence wire. That is how it travels. Disturbed ground, woodland rides, railway banks, the edge of a cleared patch — that is its country. It is a pioneer. It arrives after the ground has been opened.

Do not confuse it with great willowherb (Epilobium hirsutum). That one likes wet ditches and pond margins. The flowers are darker, the plant is hairier, and it does not make the same tall pink curtain on a dry ride. Honey bees will visit great willowherb. They do not turn it into the light Wysall jar.

Hoary willowherb and the smaller Epilobium weeds are garden nuisances with tiny flowers. They are not this plant. If it is not tall, not in a mass, and not that clean pink spike, leave it off this page.

When rosebay willowherb flowers in the UK

In a normal British summer the first spikes open in June. The main work is July into August. A late stand can still hold flower into September, especially on a north-facing ride or after a cold spring.

The useful trick is the way it opens. Because the spike flowers from the bottom up, one plant feeds bees for weeks. A whole bank feeds them for longer. That is why a stand beats a single stem in a mixed bed.

Weather still runs the show. A dry June can shorten the spike. A wet July can keep it going. The bees do not read the calendar. They read the nectar.

Why bees work it

Honey bees like a target. Rosebay willowherb in a stand is a target.

The flowers are open enough for a short tongue. Nectar comes steadily on a warm day. Pollen is there too — you will see it on the legs when the flow is on. Bumblebees use it. That is the difference between a plant that “looks good for pollinators” and a plant that fills a super. One spike in a cottage garden is a snack. A ride of it is forage.

They work it hardest in the middle of the day when the spikes are warm. Early morning can be quiet if the night was cold. Stand still on a July afternoon and you will hear it before you see the bees.

Wild bees with short flight ranges need the stand close to the nest. Honey bees will travel. Both still prefer a block they can return to. The same rule as the rest of a bee friendly garden: mass, not dots.

Leave the stand — do not plant a tidy clump

This is not lavender. Do not buy a pot, put it in the rose bed, and then complain that it ran through the gravel.

Rosebay willowherb moves by seed and by rhizome. On open ground it will take the space you give it and the space you did not mean to give it. In a small garden that is a problem. On a ride, a clearing, a rough corner at the back of an allotment, it is a gift.

The honest advice for most gardens is simple. If you already have a stand, leave it. Cut a path through it if you must walk there. Do not strim the spikes off in July because it looks “weedy”. That is the month the bees are on it.

On a large allotment or a woodland edge you can let a patch establish from seed that has blown in. You will not need to “plant” it. You will need to decide where it stops. A mown strip is a better brake than a promise.

Calling every pink spike “willowherb” and then wondering why the wet ditch never made a light honey. Great willowherb is a different plant.

Planting it in a small border. It will run. You will spend August pulling it and the bees will have nothing.

Strimming the ride in the first week of July because the parish walk looks untidy. That is the bloom.

Expecting one plant in a pot to flavour a harvest. Honey bees need a stand.

Treating fireweed and rosebay willowherb as two crops. They are one plant with two names.

You do not attract bees with a wooden ornament and a hopeful label. You attract them with food they can find, reach and return to. I watch this from the hive entrance. On a good day the foragers leave in a line and come back heavy. They are not touring the neighbourhood for scenery. They are working a patch, a block of lavender, a strip of clover, a tree in flower, and they will ignore the rest of the street if that patch pays. That is how to attract bees to your garden in Britain. Build a bee friendly garden that behaves like forage, not like a display. This page is the method. What bees actually need

Honey bees and wild bees are not looking for the same house. They are looking for the same meal.

Nectar is energy. Pollen is protein. Water is a drink on a hot day. A shallow dish with pebbles beats a steep-sided pond they can drown in. Shelter from wind helps a small garden more than people think. Sun matters, because many flowers make more nectar when they are warm.

Plant in blocks, not dots

This is the rule that changes a border from “looks wildlife-friendly” to “gets worked”.

Honey bees are efficient. A scout finds a source. The colony piles on. They want a patch they can empty and visit again tomorrow. One cosmos in a mixed bed is a miss on a windy day. A drift of the same flower is a landing light.

Think in groups of five or more of one plant, not one of everything. A metre of lavender along a path will beat twelve different “pollinator” pots scattered down the fence.

Single flowers, not doubles. If you cannot see the centre, a honey bee often cannot reach the nectar. Put the pom-pom back on the bench. Let them bloom. A herb you keep pinched for the kitchen is useful to you. A herb you let flower is useful to them. Thyme, oregano, mint, rosemary and chives all earn their space when the flowers are on. Colour helps them find the block. Blue, purple and yellow show up. Scent helps on still evenings. None of that saves a plant bred into a cushion.

Cover the year

A June garden with nothing in March and nothing in September is the usual failure.

Early in the year the colony is small and hungry. Crocus, snowdrops, hellebores, primroses, willow catkins and the first fruit blossom do the work. A few pots of crocus by the back door are not a joke. They are the first open flowers many streets have.

Summer is the easy bit. Lavender, phacelia, borage, clover, salvias. Leave a strip of lawn so the clover and the dandelions can stand. You do not need a meadow kit to start. Stop mowing one corner.

Late season is what people tidy away. Sedum, Michaelmas daisies, the last echinacea, flowering ivy. Ivy only flowers on older wood. If you cut it hard every year, you will wait forever for the bloom and then decide ivy is useless.

Trees still beat a border. One apple or a lime in the street is a field on a trunk. If you can only plant one large thing this year, plant something that flowers.

What not to spray

You cannot attract bees to a garden you have just made toxic. “One last spray for greenfly” on the roses is the usual excuse. Systemic treatments in compost and lawn feed are the quiet ones. The plant looks fine. The forage is not.

Aphids are not a reason to poison the border you planted for bees. A jet of water, a bit of mess, and leaving the hoverflies to work is uglier than a bottle. It also leaves the lavender usable.

Do not treat the lawn like a billiard table and then wonder where the clover went. Do not spray the ivy “because it harbours pests” in the same week you wanted autumn nectar.

If a product says it kills insects, assume it does not read the badge on your bee pot. Put it back.

A bee friendly garden in a small space

A balcony still counts. So does a yard with four pots.

Group the pots. One lonely thyme on a table is easy to fly past. A cluster of lavender, chives, thyme and a trough of phacelia or cosmos is a target.

Sun first. Then water. Container plants dry out and stop making nectar. A bee friendly garden in pots is a watering can job, not a set-and-forget display.

Water, mess and the bits that are not flowers

Bees drink. A saucer, pebbles, rainwater if you have it. Change it so it does not become a mosquito dish. They will also take water from a damp bit of soil.

Leave some mess. A tidy garden in March has no early forage and nowhere for a solitary bee to nest. Uncut grass, a sunny bank, a pile of stems you did not shred in November — that is habitat, not neglect.

Do not confuse a decorative “bee hotel” with a working garden. Some solitary bees will use a well-made box in sun, out of the rain, with clean tubes. Many will ignore it. The flowers still have to be there either way.
