Rosebay willowherb for bees — pink four-petalled flower spikes

Rosebay willowherb for bees

On a midsummer afternoon the landing board changes. The bees come in paler, and the smell off the combs is lighter. Walk the ride behind the apiary and you see why. Tall pink spikes, four petals, a stand that looks like it was poured down the edge of the wood. That is rosebay willowherb for bees — not a border plant, a working crop when you leave it alone.

This page is the plant. How to tell it from the wet-ground cousins, when it flowers in Britain, why honey bees pile onto it, and when the stand is heavy enough to flavour a jar. The wider list of flowers for bees stays on the hub. This is the spike they work in July.

I keep hives on village forage in the East Midlands. Around Wysall the willowherb is part of the year, not a catalogue name. When the stand is heavy enough, the bees can make a distinct honey from it. That jar is raw willowherb honey from Wysall Village. Until the stand is that heavy, plant nothing. Leave what is already there.

How to recognise rosebay willowherb

Rosebay willowherb stand on a woodland ride in summer

Rosebay willowherb is Chamerion angustifolium — you will still see Epilobium angustifolium on older labels. In North America they call it fireweed. Same plant. It is not a willow. The name is the leaf: long, narrow, willow-like, arranged up a straight stem.

Look for height first. A strong stand reaches head height and keeps going. The flower spike is pink to magenta, opening from the bottom of the raceme upwards, so you get seed fluff at the base while the tip is still in bloom. Four petals. Long stamens. In full sun the whole bank can look washed with pink.

The seed is the giveaway later in the season. Fine plumes, like rosebay snow, catching on grass and fence wire. That is how it travels. Disturbed ground, woodland rides, railway banks, the edge of a cleared patch — that is its country. It is a pioneer. It arrives after the ground has been opened.

Do not confuse it with great willowherb (Epilobium hirsutum). That one likes wet ditches and pond margins. The flowers are darker, the plant is hairier, and it does not make the same tall pink curtain on a dry ride. Honey bees will visit great willowherb. They do not turn it into the light Wysall jar.

Hoary willowherb and the smaller Epilobium weeds are garden nuisances with tiny flowers. They are not this plant. If it is not tall, not in a mass, and not that clean pink spike, leave it off this page.

When rosebay willowherb flowers in the UK

In a normal British summer the first spikes open in June. The main work is July into August. A late stand can still hold flower into September, especially on a north-facing ride or after a cold spring.

The useful trick is the way it opens. Because the spike flowers from the bottom up, one plant feeds bees for weeks. A whole bank feeds them for longer. That is why a stand beats a single stem in a mixed bed.

Weather still runs the show. A dry June can shorten the spike. A wet July can keep it going. The bees do not read the calendar. They read the nectar.

It is a midsummer plant. It does not replace crocus in March or ivy in October. If your year is only willowherb, you have a hole at both ends. Cover those with the rest of the flowers for bees list. Let the willowherb do July.

Why bees work it

Honey bees like a target. Rosebay willowherb in a stand is a target.

The flowers are open enough for a short tongue. Nectar comes steadily on a warm day. Pollen is there too — you will see it on the legs when the flow is on. Bumblebees use it. Solitary bees will take what they can from the edge of the bank. The heavy traffic we see at the hive is honey bees working a mass of the same bloom.

That is the difference between a plant that “looks good for pollinators” and a plant that fills a super. One spike in a cottage garden is a snack. A ride of it is forage.

They work it hardest in the middle of the day when the spikes are warm. Early morning can be quiet if the night was cold. Stand still on a July afternoon and you will hear it before you see the bees.

Wild bees with short flight ranges need the stand close to the nest. Honey bees will travel. Both still prefer a block they can return to. The same rule as the rest of a bee friendly garden: mass, not dots.

Leave the stand — do not plant a tidy clump

This is not lavender. Do not buy a pot, put it in the rose bed, and then complain that it ran through the gravel.

Rosebay willowherb moves by seed and by rhizome. On open ground it will take the space you give it and the space you did not mean to give it. In a small garden that is a problem. On a ride, a clearing, a rough corner at the back of an allotment, it is a gift.

The honest advice for most gardens is simple. If you already have a stand, leave it. Cut a path through it if you must walk there. Do not strim the spikes off in July because it looks “weedy”. That is the month the bees are on it.

If you have no stand and a tidy plot, do not introduce it. Sow phacelia or plant lavender. Use the best herbs for bees on the path edge. Willowherb belongs where the ground is already rough.

On a large allotment or a woodland edge you can let a patch establish from seed that has blown in. You will not need to “plant” it. You will need to decide where it stops. A mown strip is a better brake than a promise.

Do not spray it. Do not treat a ride with anything that says it kills weeds and then ask where the midsummer forage went.

What willowherb honey tastes like

Raw willowherb honey from Wysall Village 150g jar

A plant only reaches the jar when the stand is heavy enough for the bees to make a distinct honey from it. Most gardens will never do that. The bees still eat.

On our ground around Wysall, a heavy willowherb flow gives a light jar. Colour runs from pale gold to a soft amber. The set is creamy and smooth. The flavour is mild, sweet, and floral — a gentle honey, not a dark one. That is raw willowherb honey from Wysall Village.

The same landscape does not always come in as a single-plant honey. Mixed wildflower with willowherb in it, and a faint smoky edge, is the other Wysall story: raw wild bees honey from Wysall Village. That jar is the mix, not a second willowherb label. When it is on the shelf it is the record of a wider bank. When it is not, the plant is still out there.

There is no separate fireweed SKU, no “rosebay reserve”, no health claim attached to the flower. The taste is the point. Light. Floral. Easy on toast.

If you want the place behind those jars, not just the plant name, use where my honey comes from and what local honey actually is. The raw local honey shelf is the rest of the year — lime, phacelia, clover — when willowherb is not the whole story.

Common mistakes

Calling every pink spike “willowherb” and then wondering why the wet ditch never made a light honey. Great willowherb is a different plant.

Planting it in a small border. It will run. You will spend August pulling it and the bees will have nothing.

Strimming the ride in the first week of July because the parish walk looks untidy. That is the bloom.

Expecting one plant in a pot to flavour a harvest. Honey bees need a stand.

Treating fireweed and rosebay willowherb as two crops. They are one plant with two names.

Putting health claims on the jar because an old product page did. This honey tastes of the flower. That is enough.

Leaving the whole year empty except for this spike. Willowherb is midsummer. The bees still have March and September to get through.

Frequently asked questions

Is rosebay willowherb good for bees?
Yes, when it grows as a stand. Honey bees and bumblebees work the pink spikes hard in July and August. A single stem in a mixed bed is not the same thing.

Is rosebay willowherb the same as fireweed?
Yes. Fireweed is the North American name for the same species, Chamerion angustifolium.

When does rosebay willowherb flower in the UK?
Usually from June, with the main show in July and August. Late spikes can run into September.

Should I plant rosebay willowherb in my garden?
Only if you have rough ground you are willing to let it own. In a small, tidy garden, leave it out. Keep a wild stand if you already have one.

Will it take over?
It can. It seeds on the wind and spreads underground. A mown edge is the practical brake.

What does willowherb honey taste like?
Mild, sweet and floral. Light gold to soft amber, usually a creamy set. Not a dark, heavy honey.

Do you sell rosebay willowherb honey?
When the stand around Wysall is heavy enough, yes — as raw willowherb honey from Wysall Village. There is no separate “fireweed” label on the shelf.

Is great willowherb the same forage?
No. Great willowherb likes wet ground and does not make that distinct light jar here. Learn the spike before you name the honey.

Does willowherb help wild bees as well as honey bees?
Yes, if the stand is near the nest. Short-range bees will not cross three fields for a bank they cannot see.

Can I cut it after flowering?
Wait until the bees have left the tip of the spike. If you want less seed next year, cut after bloom, not during it.

Leave the pink bank

Rosebay willowherb for bees is a decision about land, not a trip to the garden centre. Leave the stand. Do not strim July. Do not pretend a pot of it is a meadow.

The plant list for the rest of the year is on flowers for bees. The jar, when the bank is heavy enough, is the Wysall willowherb pot. The map is where my honey comes from.
